Motor insurance 'days of grace' ends
An increasing number of motor insurance providers are withdrawing the period of grace after policies expire.
Insurers are now advising drivers to make sure they have a new policy before their current one expires.
Graeme Trudgill of the British Insurance Brokers' Association said: "Technically, the so called 'days of grace' has never existed.
"Insurers have in the past offered a 14-day Road Traffic Act (RTA) Certificate which was evidence of insurance pending receipt of their renewal certificate, but even this did not offer free cover," he added.
Motorists often use this period to shop around for the best deal.
