Voluntary Excesses for Motor Insurance

Savings are available on your annual motor insurance premiums by increasing the voluntary excess on your motor insurance policy. An Excess is the amount of money that you would have to pay out in the event of a claim taking place, which would need to be payed to the insurer before they deal with the remaining amount of the claim. All polices tend to have an excess but by volunteering to a pay a higher one you are likely to make savings on your policy (as long as you don't have an accident in the meantime!). Remember in your budgeting for your Motor Insurance, that you may have to pay this money should a claim occur!

The compulsory excesses applied to your policy are based on the standard excess and age excess. You may also have an excess should you be a less experienced driver.

There excesses can apply to either/or accidents and theft. This means that your excess can be quite a complex subject.

An example of this would be:

Young Driver
Age Standard Voluntary Inexperience Total
Accident Excess £250 £100 £50 £100 £500
Fire/Theft £100 £100 £50 £0 £250
Windscreen £0 £50 £0 £0 £50

It is unusual for windscreens to have experience or age excesses. However this table demonstrates how excesses can quickly amass for drivers and how they are not at all straightforward.
